The incidence of wife killing is becoming alarming in Nigeria with another case recorded in Port Harcourt in the course of this week.
Pandemonium broke out in the morning of Wednesday, April 20, 2022, in Mgbuoba Community, Obio Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, when it was discovered that a certain resident (name withheld), an indigene of Akwa Ibom State, had on Tuesday night allegedly beaten his pregnant wife to death in the heat of domestic acrimony.
The deceased, a popular vendor of bean cake (akara) adjacent to Conoil Feeling Station at Oil Zone One, along NTA Road, Mgbuoba; and a mother of three was said to have incurred the wrath of her husband when she told him that the N500 the later gave her to make food with was inadequate given the current prices of food items in the market.
The man, who purportedly gave his wife the N500 note from among the lot he brought out from his pocket, felt challenged when his wife complained that what she was given was not enough and, therefore, snatched an additional N1,000 note from him.
The man angered by his wife’s effrontery in snatching the money had allegedly descended on his pregnant wife and got her beaten up till she gave up the ghost on the spot.
The incident allegedly sparked a protest in the community against residents of Akwa Ibom origin, as they were asked to leave the community. Clean Truth gathered that the reason for the protest was that another man from Akwa Ibom State also had, in less than a week earlier, beaten his wife to a state of coma in the same community and the woman only got resuscitated at a hospital.
At the time of filing this report, order has, however, been restored in the community as the alleged wife-killer has reportedly been taken into police custody for investigation and the remains of the woman deposited in the hospital for autopsy.
